The Retina and Vitreous Department of the ICR has almost 25 of experience. It was created when the Institute was founded, introducing new laser treatments, digital angiography and retinal and vitreous surgery. It was the first European centre that used the micro-incisional technique in vitreoretinal surgery and pioneer in the latest surgical techniques and pharmacological treatments.
The department is structured in functional units and offers specific and personalised assistance according to the disease that the patient suffers. The basic goals that structure the department are:

• Multidisciplinary and coordinated attention
• Highly qualified and experienced professionals
All these factors help to offer an efficient and customised treatment in each case, either through drugs or laser treatments that we can provide, or through the latest intraocular surgical techniques.
There is a wide range of vitreoretinal diseases. It covers from common diseases such as retinal detachment and disorders caused by diabetes, to rare entites, such as those with hereditary origin. Macula diseases affecting the central part of the retina are those that have shown more recent advances in its diagnosis and treatment in the last few years, both medical and surgical. We have the technology that allows a micrometric study of the retina in a non invasive way and new antiangiogenic drugs for the treatment of age related macular degeneration. This disease is the most frequent cause of blindness in developed countries.
